The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) Air Quality Program attributes this phenomenon to emissions from vehicles and lawn equipment, compounded by warm weather, low wind speeds, and insufficient rain.
Residents are advised to prioritize their health during this period. Poor ozone quality can lead to serious health issues, including chest pain, coughing, nausea, throat irritation, and breathing difficulties, even for healthy individuals. Those particularly sensitive to air pollution are urged to limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
MARC emphasizes the importance of reducing pollution as well. Everyday actions contribute significantly to ozone emissions, so residents are encouraged to delay activities such as mowing or fueling vehicles until after 7 p.m. Additionally, opting to bike or walk to work is recommended, with an emphasis on doing so before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m.
