Kansas City Aims for Renaissance of Prospect Avenue
Kansas City, Mo. – In a bid to revitalize the troubled Prospect Avenue corridor, city officials are launching an ambitious plan to transform its reputation marked by high crime rates and abandoned buildings. The Prospect US Overlay District initiative aims to attract 40,000 new residents by establishing 17,000 housing units and creating 15,000 jobs.
Currently, around 16% of homes along Prospect are vacant, with a median household income of just $30,000, while many residents seek employment elsewhere. The area has long suffered from neglect, exacerbated by historical issues like redlining and the division created by the U.S. 71 Highway.
In response, city leaders have outlined several key improvements: implementing building standards over a nine-mile stretch of Prospect, attracting manufacturing businesses for local job creation, enhancing housing availability, and developing retail options like cafes and breweries. Efforts will also focus on cleaning up vacant properties to foster a more attractive environment.
The city council is set to vote on the Prospect Development Plan this Thursday, signaling a hopeful new chapter for an area in need of revitalization and community reinvestment.
