Construction of UW-Green Bay’s Cofrin Technology and Education Center Begins
Green Bay, WI – A significant milestone was celebrated at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UWGB) as construction for the Cofrin Technology and Education Center (CTEC) has officially begun. The groundbreaking event featured an Earth Honoring ceremony involving members of the First Nations communities and university officials, including Menominee and Ho-Chunk elders, who emphasized a reverence for nature and the land.
Designed to promote collaboration and innovation, the CTEC will serve as a versatile hub for learning, socialization, and community engagement, reflecting both modern technology and Indigenous worldviews. "The building has been crafted to adapt to an ever-evolving educational landscape," stated UWGB Chancellor Michael Alexander.
Student Government Association President Karime Galaviz echoed these sentiments, highlighting CTEC as the new gateway to campus that will foster connections among students, enhancing their social interactions and academic collaborations.
Following the completion of the CTEC in 2027, the existing Cofrin Library will be demolished, making way for this state-of-the-art, five-story facility. With a budget of $101 million, the project aims not only to enhance educational offerings but also to serve the wider northeastern Wisconsin community. It will feature spaces for entrepreneurial activities, student studies, and a unique “Three Sisters Café,” inspired by Indigenous agriculture.
Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman emphasized that the project prioritizes the needs of students and the community, affirming its importance for quality education and facilities. As Wisconsin’s fastest-growing university, UW-Green Bay is poised to create a forward-thinking environment that champions both innovation and cultural inclusivity.
