Federal judges halt enforcement of DEI ban by US Education Department

A federal judge in Maryland has ordered the Trump administration to pause enforcement of a new U.S. Education Department ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. This decision comes after another federal judge in New Hampshire issued a preliminary injunction blocking the administration from revoking federal funding from schools. The Maryland judge’s ruling was based on the way the Trump administration developed the policy, rather than on the policy itself. The New Hampshire ruling limited the injunction to schools that employ members of the National Education Association or the Center for Black Educator Development. Teachers unions, including the NEA, have sued the administration over the ban on race-conscious practices, arguing that it is unconstitutional and harmful to students. The Education Department has not yet commented on the rulings. The rulings highlight the ongoing legal battle over the administration’s policies and decisions regarding education.
