New research has shown that individuals with prediabetes who follow an online lifestyle programme are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The study found that those on a digital intervention were 46% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years. Type 2 diabetes is associated with various health complications, and the US has a high percentage of adults living with prediabetes. In the trial, researchers examined the health outcomes of over 100,000 adults, with some following a digital dietitian-guided lifestyle programme. The results showed that those with prediabetes who followed the digital programme were significantly less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Additionally, they saw improvements in their lipid levels. The study also found that individuals with type 2 diabetes who followed the digital intervention were more likely to achieve remission. The authors highlighted the importance of early identification of metabolic deterioration and suggested that fully digital interventions may have more modest impacts compared to in-person approaches. The findings of this study emphasize the potential benefits of digital lifestyle programmes in preventing and managing type 2 diabetes. Read the full study in the journal Nutrients.
