Preparing Students for Success at This Health Science High School

Tanaya Pinkston, a senior at McClure Health Science High School in Georgia, was inspired to pursue a career as a pediatric ICU nurse after witnessing her mother have a stroke at a young age. The compassion shown by the 911 operator during that frightening experience left a lasting impression on her.

The school, with a $38 million budget, prepares students for healthcare careers through hands-on learning and training with state-of-the-art equipment. Students graduate with certifications that help them start working in healthcare right away or further their education in college.

McClure serves a majority Hispanic and lower-income population, and is helping bridge the racial gap in the healthcare field. Dr. Gypsy Hernandez, the principal, believes the school is preparing students to provide services in various languages and understand different cultural backgrounds to better serve patients and communities.

Through partnerships with local hospitals and healthcare facilities, students at McClure have the opportunity to gain real-world experience and interact with equipment they would not normally have access to. The school not only helps students solidify their career goals, but also provides them with the necessary tools and experience to succeed in the healthcare industry.
