KU baseball secures clean sweep against K-State

The Kansas baseball team completed their first sweep of the Sunflower Showdown against Kansas State since 2019 with two victories on Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark. The wins moved the Jayhawks into a three-way tie for second place in the Big 12 conference with a 12-6 league play record and 31-10 overall. After a tough 0-4 week, the 4-0 winning streak put KU back on track and out of national rankings. Both games on Saturday started with K-State taking early leads, but they struggled to score in the later innings, leading to KU’s victories.

Pitchers Cooper Moore and Alex Breckheimer played key roles in the first game, with Moore lasting eight innings and Breckheimer securing the save. In the second game, Brady Counsell’s two-run double helped the Jayhawks secure a 6-4 victory. Notable performances came from Michael Brooks, Brady Ballinger, and Sawyer Smith at the plate. Head coach Dan Fitzgerald commended the team’s competitive nature and ability to have fun while winning.

Despite Maximus Martin’s standout performance for K-State, the Wildcats were unable to overcome KU’s strong pitching and hitting. Kansas will now face Nebraska in a midweek matchup before heading on the road to play Utah in their next conference series. The Jayhawks will look to carry their winning momentum into these upcoming games as they continue their push for a successful season.
