Kansas City leaders are working to prevent a food desert on the city’s east side, where a struggling grocery store, Sun Fresh Market, is fighting to stay afloat. The store, located at W. 31st and Prospect Avenue, is facing challenges due to drug deals and prostitution in the area, leading to a decrease in customers and empty shelves.
Missouri Attorney General has sued the city over a Sunshine request related to the situation. Community Builders, the nonprofit that manages Sun Fresh, has expressed concerns about the store’s financial losses and inability to offer WIC benefits due to not being a full-line grocery store.
City Councilmember Melissa Robinson is proposing a $1.2 million city subsidy to help the store upgrade, replenish stock, and improve security. Businesses in the area see Sun Fresh as a retail hub that brings a sense of community. Concerns have been raised about the potential closure of Sun Fresh leading to surrounding stores drying up.
The proposed ordinance is set for a second reading next Tuesday.
