The 100th Kansas Relays kicked off at Rock Chalk Park with impressive performances from the Kansas track and field team’s freshmen athletes. Kaitlyn Swartz finished third in the women’s 5,000-meter race, while Emery Mayfield claimed first in the same event. In the men’s competition, freshman Blake Wohler secured third place in the 5K. Other notable finishes included Grace Cramblett and Lauren Heck placing in the top 10 in the women’s 800-meter run, Payton Kasper coming in fourth in the men’s pole vault, and Weston Van Camp achieving a personal best in the hammer throw.
Despite strong showings from the freshmen athletes, some top contenders, including Kenadi Krueger and Tori Wingrove in the women’s 5K, did not finish the race. The men’s 5K saw KU’s Peter Walsdorf and Samuel Trumble leading before unable to finish, allowing Sibonelo Khumalo and Manny Vela to take the top spots.
As the action continues on Friday with high school relays and preliminary events for the 100- and 110-meter hurdles, fans can expect more thrilling performances from both new and seasoned competitors. The Kansas Relays, celebrating its 100th year, promises to showcase the talent and dedication of athletes from across the country.
