A father and son duo from Kansas City, John R. Thibeaux II and John R. Thibeaux I, are facing charges in connection to a fatal dog mauling incident that resulted in the death of 46-year-old Chris Culbertson last year. The two have been charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter and second-degree assault. Prosecutor Melesa Johnson emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership and proper animal containment to prevent such tragedies. The incident took place on Nov. 2, 2024, when multiple dogs attacked Culbertson in the East 80th Street and College area. Despite efforts by law enforcement to chase the dogs away, they were able to enter Thibeaux II’s yard through an improperly installed fence. Surveillance video revealed that the dogs were in Thibeaux II’s yard before the attack, with one dog initiating the attack and others joining in. Thibeaux II, who was identified as a dog breeder, had previously experienced a dog bite incident involving his own dogs. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and proper containment practices.
