Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, a U.S. citizen born in Georgia, was released from the Leon County Jail after being held for more than 24 hours for illegally entering Florida as an “unauthorized alien.” Following his release, he tearfully reunited with his mother at a Wendy’s near the jail. Lopez-Gomez had been arrested following a traffic stop where he was a passenger in a car traveling above the speed limit.
Despite being a U.S. citizen, Lopez-Gomez faced a tough situation and expressed his concerns about being held without being fed. His mother worries about the family living in fear of deportation despite their citizenship. After a court appearance where the judge found no probable cause for the charge, he was released but will have to return to court in May.
Lopez-Gomez’s arrest was under a new law that has been temporarily blocked by a federal judge. The law makes it a misdemeanor for undocumented immigrants over 18 to knowingly enter Florida after eluding immigration inspection. The driver of the car and another passenger also faced charges. Lopez-Gomez was met with cheers from protesters upon his release.
