Maryland senator barred from visiting wrongly deported man in El Salvador

Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen was denied a meeting with Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident mistakenly deported to El Salvador. Abrego Garcia, who is in a notorious mega-prison there, was the subject of a protest outside a U.S. court. Van Hollen met with the Salvadoran Vice President, who refused to allow the senator to meet with Abrego Garcia. The senator was also denied a phone call to check on Abrego Garcia’s well-being. The Trump administration claimed Abrego Garcia was a member of the MS-13 gang but provided no evidence. Van Hollen vowed to continue working to bring Abrego Garcia back to Maryland, despite El Salvador’s president refusing to send him back to the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security posted a restraining order filed against Abrego Garcia by his wife, but she clarified that no harm was done, and the case did not proceed. The White House press secretary defended the deportation actions, citing the restraining order as evidence against Abrego Garcia.
