KCPS staff and city leaders rally together in support of school bond vote

Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas, along with teachers, students, parents, and city council members, rallied on Saturday to show their support for a “yes” vote on the upcoming Kansas City Public Schools bond. The $474 million bond would go towards updating districtwide school buildings, including James Elementary, which is in desperate need of renovations. Principal Marjorie Mayes highlighted issues with the 110-year-old building, such as lack of ADA accessibility and burst pipes, making it unfit for the 21st century. The bond would be funded by a new property tax, with an additional $0.61 tax per every $100 of property valuation. Supporters believe that investing in school facilities is essential for the city’s growth and reputation, and urged voters to consider the long-term benefits for students. The school bond vote is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8, and supporters are hoping for a positive outcome to provide better opportunities for Kansas City’s youth.
