With the support of the American Heart Association, state lawmakers have included $1.5 million in the budget for AEDs and CPR training in schools to create a network of confident lifesavers. Currently, less than 50% of the public feels prepared to act in a cardiac emergency, so teaching these skills in schools can make a significant impact.
The funds will help schools cover the costs of equipment and training, making it easier for everyone to learn how to respond in a medical emergency. Herrman believes that more heroes like the ones who saved her daughter can be created through these efforts. The final step is for Governor Laura Kelly to approve the budget, which could potentially save more lives in the future.
