FBI agents executed search warrants at the homes of Indiana University computer science professor XiaoFeng Wang and his wife Nianli Ma last week. Both Wang and Ma had their online profiles removed from their respective departments at Indiana University. The FBI confirmed the execution of the search warrants at their homes in Carmel and Bloomington, but did not provide further details. There is no record of any federal criminal case against the couple.
Wang, who has been at Indiana University for two decades, is an associate dean for research at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering. His research focuses on system security and data privacy, and he has received substantial funding for his projects. Ma is a systems analyst and program in Indiana University’s library division.
Jackie Bennett Jr., a criminal defense lawyer, was seen arriving at Ma’s home with the FBI during the search. Video footage showed an agent seizing a phone from Ma. Bennett is a former federal prosecutor who worked on the investigation led by Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr regarding then-President Bill Clinton’s relationship with Monica Lewinsky.
Both Wang and Ma have not commented on the situation. Indiana University declined to provide information about their employment status and directed inquiries to the FBI. The nature of the investigation and the reasons behind the search warrants remain unclear, as authorities have not disclosed any further details.
