What to do if you suspect you have the measles

As measles cases continue to rise across the United States, health experts are warning about the dangers of exposing vulnerable populations in healthcare settings. The highly contagious virus can spread rapidly in crowded waiting rooms, putting patients at risk, especially those who are pregnant, immunocompromised, or medically vulnerable. In order to control the spread of measles, individuals with suspected cases are advised to take precautions before visiting a doctor’s office or the emergency room.

With over 500 measles cases reported in at least 20 states, medical professionals are urging people to seek care responsibly to prevent further transmission. Patients with measles symptoms should call ahead before going to a healthcare facility, wear masks, and follow any instructions from healthcare providers to minimize exposure to others.

Hospital staff may need to create isolation rooms with specialized airflow systems to contain the virus and prevent it from spreading to other patients. Additionally, those affected by measles should avoid coming into contact with vulnerable populations and wear masks while in healthcare settings.

There is no specific treatment for measles, and patients are advised to seek supportive care, such as fluids and fever-reducing medications. Hospitalization may be necessary for about 20% of individuals who contract the virus, with common complications including pneumonia and dehydration.

To avoid infecting others, individuals with measles should stay home during the contagious period, which lasts four days before and after the characteristic rash appears. Vaccination within 72 hours of exposure can reduce the risk of infection, as measles vaccines are highly effective in preventing the disease. It is important to follow healthcare guidelines and take precautions to protect both oneself and others from the spread of measles.
