International aid has started to arrive in Myanmar following a devastating earthquake that has resulted in a death toll of 694 and 1,670 injured. The military government has reported a significant increase in casualties from the initial count of 144 deaths. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings have been severely affected, leading to the need for search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
The junta leader has called for assistance from any country and international aid has started to pour in, with China, Russia, and the U.S. offering help. The U.S. Geological Survey has predicted that the death toll in Myanmar could exceed 10,000 people, with losses possibly exceeding the country’s GDP.
Rescue efforts are underway in Myanmar’s second-largest city, Mandalay, which was close to the epicenter of the quake. In neighboring Thailand, a rescue mission is ongoing to find construction workers trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building. China and Russia have sent teams of rescuers, doctors, and search dogs to aid in the search for survivors.
In Bangkok, nine people have died and 101 are missing, mostly laborers trapped in the collapsed building. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities vowing to use all available resources to save lives. The situation in the Thai capital is gradually improving, with hundreds of people finding shelter in city parks.
