Kansas Legislature approves tax relief amidst concerns of unkept promises and increasing expenditures

Kansas Democrats criticize Republican tax relief efforts

Fairway Democrat Sen. Ethan Corson criticized Republicans for their efforts to reduce property taxes in Kansas, calling it “measly.” Two tax bills, Senate Bill 35 and Senate Bill 269, have cleared the Senate and are heading to the governor’s desk, but Democrats condemned the legislation as falling short of campaign promises to Kansans.

Senate Bill 35 eliminates state property taxes on education and institutional building funds, while Senate Bill 269 aims to reduce individual and corporate income tax rates. However, Democrats argue that the tax relief measures are not substantial enough to make a significant impact on taxpayers.

Republicans, led by Sen. Caryn Tyson, defended the bills as efforts to combat government spending and limit tax burdens on Kansans. The changes, if triggered, will go into effect in 2025, but Democrats like Sen. Corson remain critical of the lack of immediate relief for taxpayers. The Senate adjourned but will reconvene for a veto session in April.
