Husband files lawsuit accusing KC area hospital of malpractice in woman’s death

Melvin Carey has filed a civil lawsuit against Saint Luke’s Health System for medical malpractice after his wife, Diana Carey, died three days after a failed procedure to address blocked arteries. According to court records, Diana was admitted to Saint Luke’s Hospital in Lee’s Summit on March 20, 2023, for foot pain and a wound on her foot. Doctors attempted to improve her blood flow with a procedure, which was unsuccessful. Despite signs of hypertension, Diana was cleared to move to a regular hospital floor instead of continued monitoring. She later experienced low blood sugar, confusion, and other complications, eventually leading to her death on March 24.

The lawsuit alleges that medical errors during the procedure and a failure to properly diagnose and respond to Diana’s complications contributed to her death. Melvin Carey is seeking compensation exceeding $25,000 for medical costs, emotional suffering, and loss of companionship. He is demanding a jury trial for the case.

Neither Melvin Carey’s legal representation nor Saint Luke’s Health System immediately responded to requests for comment. A spokesperson for the hospital declined to comment on the litigation. The lawsuit claims that the hospital lacked proper policies and procedures to prevent negligence by doctors, resulting in a loss for chance of survival and a more favorable outcome for Diana Carey.
