Attorney of Detained Tufts Student Accuses Immigration Officials of Targeting Muslim Students During Ramadan

Tufts University graduate student Rumeysa Ozturk was arrested in the street by immigration officers, had her visa revoked, and was detained while on her way to break the day-time fast observed by Muslims during Ramadan. Her attorney alleges that federal officers are targeting Muslim students deliberately during this holy month. Ozturk, a Turkish national with a valid F-1 student visa, was reportedly targeted because of her co-authorship of an article about Palestine, according to her attorney. Despite a federal court order preventing her removal from Massachusetts, she was sent to an ICE processing center in Louisiana. Lawmakers, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have called for her release, citing concerns about due process and the targeting of individuals with valid legal status for expressing political views. The lawmakers question why Ozturk was arrested and her visa revoked, and express alarm over the revocation of visas for around 300 students involved in political activism. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security have not yet responded to requests for comment on the case. The incident has sparked a debate on the treatment of Muslim students and the importance of protecting individuals’ rights and legal status.
