Dr. Gerhardt Konig, a 46-year-old anesthesiologist in Honolulu, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder after allegedly trying to push his wife off a hiking trail and hitting her with a rock. The incident occurred at the Pali Puka hiking trail, where Konig was hiking with his wife. Witnesses called 911 after seeing him beat his wife, who was then transported to a hospital in critical condition. Konig fled the scene but was arrested eight hours later after a brief foot pursuit. He is currently being held on a $5 million bond and it is unclear if he has entered a plea or retained a lawyer. Konig still holds his medical license in Hawaii, where he works as a partner at an anesthesia medical group in Maui. His wife is a project manager at TerraPower, a nuclear reactor design company founded by Bill Gates. The couple got married in 2018 and got engaged the year prior. The University of Pittsburgh and Konig’s employer in Maui have not yet commented on the incident.
