Several dozen people gathered at an apartment complex on Daniel Island in South Carolina to remember an alligator named Walter who had been a resident there for over a decade. Walter was killed after several complaints about his presence in the complex. Neighbors described Walter as a piece of the community, with many residents fond of him and unbothered by his presence. The apartment complex had been issued a permit to remove the alligator if necessary due to state law.
Despite being a protected species, permits can be granted to kill or remove alligators if they pose a threat to people. In the past decade, six people have been killed by alligators in South Carolina. The property management expressed appreciation for understanding the situation and asked residents to refrain from feeding wildlife and interfering with displaced animals in the future. A vigil organizer stated that Walter’s death had saddened the community, as residents had grown attached to him over the years. Walter was known for sunning himself by a pond on the property and was considered a beloved part of the community. The property management assured that his death followed state law and emphasized the importance of safety when dealing with wildlife.
