University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki has been missing since early March 6 while on spring break in the Dominican Republic. Her family has now requested the police in the Dominican Republic to declare her dead, as her body has not been found despite an extensive search. Konanki was last seen after going to the beach with friends and then staying behind with people she met on the trip. The last person believed to have seen her is Joshua Riibe, a senior at St. Cloud State University from Iowa, whose passport has been confiscated as part of the investigation.
Riibe has been confined to the hotel, escorted by the police, and is not free to leave. In an interview with investigators, he said that he and Konanki were in waist-deep water before a wave took them out to sea, causing them both to swallow a lot of water. Riibe managed to get Konanki back to shore, but she disappeared after that. Authorities in the Dominican Republic have not named any suspects in Konanki’s disappearance, and U.S. authorities have classified it as a missing persons case rather than a criminal matter.
There were red flags flying at the beach when Konanki disappeared, indicating strong currents and high waves. Police have found no signs of violence on the beach. Riibe has been cooperating with investigators and expressed his desire to help in the search for Konanki. The case remains unresolved, with Konanki’s family still awaiting closure on her disappearance.
