United States airman charged with murder of woman who has been missing in South Dakota since August

An airman stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing of a woman named Sahela Sangrait. Sangrait, whose badly decomposed body was found by hikers in March, had been reported missing in August. The relationship between the airman, Quinterius Chappelle, and Sangrait is unclear. Chappelle, an aircraft inspection journeyman, entered the service in 2019. Officials from Ellsworth Air Force Base have stated that they are working with local law enforcement in the investigation and will hold service members accountable for their actions. Sangrait, a Native American, was last seen staying with a friend in Eagle Butte before reportedly travelling to Box Elder, her hometown, and then planning a trip to California. Chappelle is currently being held in the Pennington County Jail without bail. The U.S. attorney’s office for South Dakota will prosecute the case, and the investigation involves multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Anyone with information about Sangrait’s killing is asked to contact the FBI’s Rapid City office. The Air Force and Ellsworth Air Force Base have not responded to requests for comment.
