Lawsuit alleges ancient fossils from 380 million years ago discarded in landfill due to New Jersey college failing to pay UPS bill

Professor Martin Becker of William Paterson University has filed a lawsuit against the New Jersey university claiming negligence that led to his 380-million-year-old fossil collection ending up in a Nashville landfill. Becker spent countless hours collecting the marine invertebrate fossils from the High Mountain area of Wayne, New Jersey and had planned to collaborate on a project with a colleague in Florida. However, when he sent the collection via UPS, the packages never arrived. It was later discovered that the packages had been intercepted and dumped at a landfill due to the university’s failure to pay outstanding invoices. Becker is seeking damages for the lost collection and emotional distress caused by the incident. The mailroom supervisor, Raymond Boone, who was responsible for the handling of the packages, is also named as a defendant in the case. Despite Becker’s repeated attempts to resolve the issue, he claims he was not provided with tracking information in a timely manner. The lawsuit alleges that Boone was aware of the cancellation of WPU’s account with UPS for outstanding invoices but failed to inform Becker. Both Boone and William Paterson University have not responded to requests for comment on the lawsuit.
