Former Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools police officer Marialexa Sanoja founded Missión Despegue, a nonprofit, after resigning over concerns with the district’s handling of student safety needs. Sanoja’s complaints about the handling of incidents, including a sexual assault case, were validated by experts in school safety communications. She aims to empower the predominantly Latino community in Wyandotte County and help them achieve the “American dream.”
Through Missión Despegue, Sanoja assists students in obtaining their GED certificates, driver’s licenses, mental health care, and prevents substance abuse. The nonprofit works to address the root causes of issues like violence and bullying seen in schools, with Sanoja covering various costs for students in need. The organization also provides Narcan, drug prevention education, and offers support to parents and volunteers.
Sanoja’s dedication to helping students succeed has garnered support from over 100 volunteers, and she continues to work tirelessly without pay, aiming to provide opportunities for every child she encounters.
