Fear Mounts as Israel Bombs Occupied West Bank: Will it Become the Next Gaza?

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has dramatically increased its use of airstrikes in the occupied West Bank, a tactic that was once rare in the region. According to Israeli human rights group B’Tselem, at least 69 airstrikes have been conducted in the West Bank, resulting in the deaths of 261 people, including 41 minors. The use of airstrikes in the West Bank has not been seen at this level of intensity even during the Second Intifada, a Palestinian uprising in the early 2000s.

The surge in airstrikes has raised concerns that Israel is employing similar military tactics in the West Bank as it has in the Gaza Strip, which is located about 60 miles away. The escalation in airstrikes has been particularly alarming since the Jan. 19 ceasefire in Gaza, with at least 28 people killed in the West Bank since that date.

The increase in airstrikes is seen as a troubling indication of Israel’s heavy-handed approach in the West Bank, with human rights groups warning of the destructive path that the Israeli military is taking in the region. The use of airstrikes in the West Bank has led to a significant loss of life, including many civilians, and has prompted fears of further escalation and violence in the already volatile region.
