Proposed service cuts by KCATA would eliminate several routes

In a recent KCATA proposal, it was outlined that nearly half of the bus routes in Kansas City could be cut, with reduced hours and weekend service for remaining routes. Despite the city’s slight increase in budget allocation for the KCATA, rising costs and the loss of federal COVID-relief dollars are forcing the transit authority to consider cost-cutting measures. Thousands of riders could be impacted, with essential routes facing potential elimination. The plan also calls for the elimination of the on-demand ride-share program IRIS to save money. Riders expressed concern about the potential cuts and many are willing to pay bus fares to maintain service. However, the technological challenges of restoring fares quickly present a barrier. KCATA mentioned that implementing a new fare collection system based on a rider’s ability to pay could raise millions annually, but it would take time to implement. If funding remains unchanged, reduced service could begin on May 4th as approved on March 27th.
