Meta’s Community Notes on Facebook and Instagram to incorporate technology from X

Meta is set to launch a new feature called Community Notes to help monitor and combat misinformation on its platforms. The tool will use technology developed by Elon Musk’s X as a foundation for its services. Meta plans to modify the algorithm over time to better serve Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

Mark Zuckerberg introduced Community Notes as a replacement for third-party fact-checking in the U.S. Users can apply to become contributors as long as they meet certain requirements. Contributors will be able to flag various forms of content, except for advertisements.

Community Notes will provide additional context but won’t affect how widely content can be shared. The system will require agreement from multiple individuals before a note can be published, helping to prevent organized campaigns from manipulating the system.

Meta is currently testing the program in the U.S. with around 200,000 people signed up to be contributors. The company plans to expand the model nationally once they are confident in its effectiveness. While Community Notes can provide context for online content, experts caution that it is not a substitute for formal fact-checking.

Meta is considering releasing more technical details about Community Notes in the future. The company aims to continuously improve the system as they gather feedback and data from the beta testing phase.
