House Democrats unite in legal battle against Trump’s attempts to dismantle consumer protection agency

House Democratic leaders have filed an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit seeking to block the dismantling of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). They argue that President Trump’s attempt to shutter the CFPB creates harm to consumers, violates the law, and undermines the Constitution. The brief has been filed in U.S. District Court in Washington by top Democrats, including Rep. Maxine Waters and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Over 175 House Democrats have signed on to the brief.

The CFPB, created in 2010, has been successful in delivering billions of dollars back to consumers who have been defrauded by financial entities. Acting CFPB Director Russell Vought recently suspended much of the agency’s activities, prompting a lawsuit from the National Treasury Employees Union. A hearing is scheduled for Monday to address the halt in CFPB activities.

The House Democrats’ Litigation and Rapid Response Task Force, created by Jeffries to counter the Trump administration’s actions, plans to support legal challenges against the administration. Filing an amicus brief in the CFPB case was their first choice due to the potential impact on consumers. Democrats argue that shutting down the agency would leave consumers and businesses vulnerable to financial misconduct. They see the case as an assault on their lawmaking power and an attack on an effective federal agency.

The task force aims to coordinate with relevant committee leaders and develop strategies to respond to the administration’s actions through legislation, litigation, oversight, and investigations. They view the CFPB case as a crucial battle in protecting consumers and ensuring financial regulation.
