More than 7,000 employees of fraudulent call centers in Myanmar are awaiting repatriation following a regional crackdown.

A crackdown on online scam centers has resulted in over 7,000 people from around the world being held in a Myanmar border town awaiting repatriation. This coordinated effort among Thailand, Myanmar, and China aims to combat scam networks that lure victims to work in scam centers in Southeast Asia, exploiting people through false romances, bogus investments, and illegal gambling schemes. The crackdown has strained the resources of Thailand, causing delays and concerns about a possible humanitarian crisis.

Officials from the three countries are expected to meet to address logistics, as Thailand has cut off utilities to areas in Myanmar hosting scam centers. Aid groups in Mae Sot, Thailand, where many victims are held, are overwhelmed by the scale of the operation and stress the need for a global response to assist these victims of human trafficking.

Thailand’s deputy prime minister acknowledged concerns about the situation and stated that relevant agencies are working to coordinate repatriations as quickly as possible. Logistical issues, such as identity verification, have complicated and slowed down repatriation efforts. Over half of the 7,000 waiting are Chinese, with the rest from a variety of countries.

Hundreds of Chinese have been repatriated, with China chartering flights to facilitate the process. Many victims trafficked to Myanmar through Mae Sot are now awaiting repatriation in Thailand. This crackdown highlights the need for international cooperation to address the exploitation and trafficking of individuals through online scams in Southeast Asia.
