Experts Warn That Kansas City Has a Predatory Towing Issue Affecting Car Owners

Residents of Kansas City have been facing issues with predatory towing, where tow trucks unjustly take cars, and then charge excessive amounts to return them. Ahmani Lewis, a single mother, fell victim to this when her car was taken by Downtown Towing and Recovery from a handicapped spot, even though she had a valid placard. The tow company demanded $405 to release her car, but upon finding no violations on her part, Lewis left without paying.

Consumer spokesperson Teresa Murray from PIRG conducted a study revealing Missouri, especially the Kansas City area, to have an abundance of predatory towing complaints. Despite having laws to protect car owners, many towing companies in the area fail to comply. Lewis, who had her car taken twice, is now acting as her own attorney in a lawsuit against Downtown Towing and Recovery. Her 2017 Chevrolet Cruz has gone missing again, with its tracking system removed, leaving her in a challenging situation. As citizens demand more accountability from towing companies, issues surrounding predatory towing in Kansas City continue to persist.
