Kansans convene virtual town hall to express concerns about Trump and Musk in Sen. Jerry Moran’s absence

Laura Mead hosted a virtual town hall for U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, who did not attend, on Feb. 22, 2025. Mead, an artist in Dover, has been calling Moran’s office daily to address concerns about Elon Musk and President Donald Trump’s appointments. She worries about Moran’s lack of checks and balances in allowing Trump and Musk to dismantle important agencies. The virtual town hall featured 32 speakers, including farmers, veterans, and healthcare workers, expressing concerns over Trump and Musk’s policies.

Participants raised issues such as Musk’s comments on federal programs and Medicare fraud, as well as the layoffs of Department of Veterans Affairs employees. The event also highlighted the impact of federal spending freezes on farmers and rural businesses. Moran’s office did not respond to requests for comment.

Mead sees Moran as a key figure in standing up against Trump and Musk’s actions, calling for him to advocate for programs that support Americans’ needs for a dignified standard of living. Moran’s lack of response to these concerns has drawn criticism from constituents, urging him to take action.
