In Detroit, two children aged 2 and 9 died from suspected exposure to the cold after being found unresponsive in a van where their family was living. The children were discovered not breathing by their mother and taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The mother had parked the van at a casino parking garage and it ran out of gas in the cold temperatures.
The tragedy occurred when Detroit had temperatures of around 12 degrees with wind chills of 6 degrees. Three other children survived and there is an ongoing investigation by the police department. Captain Nathan Duda emphasized the need to examine the circumstances and provide assistance to those in need during the cold weather.
Duda urged people to utilize resources such as shelters, churches, or other facilities available to help those in need. He also encouraged individuals to call 911 if they see others requiring assistance. The situation was described as sad, especially for parents, and Duda expressed sympathy for the family of the deceased children. The police department is committed to offering resources, transportation, food, clothing, and shelter to those in need during extreme weather conditions.
