Liberty PD provides statement regarding issues at local Mexican restaurant

Twelve migrants were arrested at El Potro restaurant in Liberty, Missouri on Friday morning. Liberty Police Department received a tip from a federal agency about the presence of two fugitives at the restaurant, but did not respond as they were not requested for assistance. Clay County Sheriff Will Akin was informed by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) that they were there to arrest one person wanted for a child sex crime, but ended up detaining 12 illegal immigrants as well. The Sheriff’s Office cannot enforce immigration laws and was not involved in the operation. The incident has sparked controversy, with one deputy being placed on administrative leave for making an offensive post on Facebook. Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zachary Thompson stated that their office was not involved in the operation. As of now, it is unclear whether all 12 individuals detained are still in custody. The situation is under investigation, with local, state, and federal partners working together to enforce the law and ensure community safety.
