U.S. Senator Roger Marshall cites diversity, equity, and inclusion hiring policies as a contributing factor in crash of Wichita flight • Kansas Reflector

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas recently made controversial comments linking President Biden’s diversity initiatives within the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to the catastrophic midair collision of a passenger jet and a military helicopter near Washington, D.C. Marshall claimed that by rejecting white male applicants in favor of diversity hires, hiring standards were lowered, leading to safety concerns in U.S. airspace. The collision resulted in the deaths of 64 people on the airline and three aboard the helicopter, including individuals from Kansas.

In response, a group including Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly, Wichita Mayor Lily Wu, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom, and U.S. Rep. Ron Estes issued a joint statement expressing sympathy for the victims and their families. U.S. Senator Jerry Moran also expressed condolences, noting that Kansans were among the deceased.

The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the incident, with early indications suggesting possible air traffic controller errors. Marshall, a former physician, criticized DEI initiatives at the FAA and highlighted longstanding concerns about air traffic control shortages. The incident has raised questions about aviation safety and the need for stricter hiring practices within the FAA.
