A Catholic church in Lenexa is facing criticism from some parishioners after appointing a priest who was previously accused of sexual assault of a minor at a parish in Topeka. Father John Pilcher, the priest in question, maintains his innocence and the allegations were found unsubstantiated after an investigation by law enforcement and the Archdiocese. Despite this, concerns have been raised by members of the Holy Trinity community, especially since the parish has a school and child care center on its campus.
Following the announcement of Pilcher’s hiring, a petition calling for his resignation has garnered over 200 signatures. The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests has also called for Pilcher to resign. The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas has stated that they take the safety of children seriously and enforce strict safe environment protocols in all parish entities.
In response to the concerns raised by parishioners, the Archdiocese is encouraging anyone with knowledge of misconduct to report it immediately and has provided a confidential reporting line. Archbishop Joseph Naumann addressed the issue during a mass on Jan. 21, emphasizing the thorough investigation that had taken place before Pilcher was hired. The church is committed to addressing concerns and ensuring that parents and children feel safe within the parish community.
