Trump administration revokes extension of temporary protections for Venezuelan immigrants, reports Kansas Reflector

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has revoked an extension of temporary protective status for nearly 600,000 Venezuelans, as reported by the New York Times. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem canceled the 18-month protections that were renewed until October 2026 under the Biden administration. The decision comes amid President Trump’s directive for immigration enforcement actions and mass deportations of undocumented people. The revocation, effective immediately, is expected to face legal challenges, as it was argued that DHS does not have the authority to cancel the TPS extension for Venezuela. Noem, during her confirmation hearing, criticized the TPS program and stated that countries should have their designation reevaluated. Currently, there are 17 countries under TPS status, including Venezuela. The move is likely to have significant implications for the hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans who have fled to the U.S. in recent years due to the instability of their government.
