Ontario to Ban U.S. Alcohol from Shelves Following Trump’s Tariffs Announcement

Ontario is set to remove all American alcohol from its government-run liquor shelves and catalog in response to President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian imports. Premier Doug Ford announced this decision, stating that the LCBO, one of the largest wholesalers of alcohol in Ontario, will no longer sell American alcohol. This move came hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods.

The LCBO will cease all sales of U.S. alcohol products online and in stores indefinitely, as it is the importer of record for all American alcohol into Ontario. The LCBO currently lists over 3,600 products from 35 U.S. states. Canada primarily imports hard liquor from America, with an estimated $320 million in sales. Other Canadian provinces, like Nova Scotia and British Columbia, have also announced similar measures in response to the tariffs.

Ford encouraged consumers to choose Ontario-made or Canadian-made products instead of American alcohol. The LCBO’s decision to remove American alcohol from its shelves is part of a larger effort to support Canadian products and retaliate against the U.S. tariffs.
