Minneapolis to pay $600,000 settlement to woman alleging Derek Chauvin knelt on her neck

The city of Minneapolis has agreed to pay $600,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by Patty Day, a woman who alleged that former Officer Derek Chauvin used excessive force on her in a manner similar to the way he killed George Floyd. Day, who was drunk and distressed at the time, claimed that Chauvin and another officer forcefully removed her from her vehicle and pinned her to the ground with his knee, causing injuries. A drunken driving charge against Day was later dropped due to lack of probable cause.

This settlement adds to the over $36 million that the city has paid to settle police misconduct cases involving Chauvin, including $27 million to the Floyd family. Day’s attorney, Katie Bennett, stated that while the settlement cannot undo what Patty endured, it is a step in holding the officers accountable for their actions. The case highlights the ongoing need for justice and reform in policing.

Chauvin, who is currently in prison for his convictions in the murder of George Floyd, remains a symbol of racial injustice and police brutality. The settlement in Day’s case reflects the broader nationwide reckoning with these issues. The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved the settlement, with a portion going to Day and the rest to her attorneys.
