The Pitch has joined forces with local organization Loud Light in an effort to empower individuals from underrepresented communities and influence decision-makers. Each week during the Kansas statehouse session, they release a video summarizing legislative activities. The latest video highlights controversial bills related to transgender healthcare, school vouchers, local government vs. Kobach, and property tax cuts.
The bill targeting transgender kids has passed, creating a two-tiered system for certain healthcare treatments. School voucher hearings have taken place in an attempt to divert public funds to private schools. A bill is also being heard to reverse Kris Kobach’s decision to invalidate an election result in Greeley County due to a technicality. The Senate has passed two bills cutting property taxes, one eliminating a property tax levy and the other exempting certain items from property tax.
Looking ahead, legislators will address constitutional amendments on voter eligibility and gun owners’ rights. Committee hearings will focus on protecting families from separation due to poverty, banning guaranteed income programs by local governments, and eliminating the 3-day mail processing period for ballots. Stay engaged and informed with Loud Light’s weekly updates on the statehouse activities in Kansas.
