Kansas Reflector reports on Trump’s decision to ban openly transgender individuals from serving in the military

President Donald Trump signed executive orders late on Monday night, banning openly transgender service members from the U.S. military and suppressing diversity initiatives. The orders also prohibit the promotion of “un-American” concepts in military educational institutions. The policy revokes a 2021 Biden administration order allowing transgender people to serve, citing medical, surgical, and mental health constraints as reasons for the ban.

Former President Joe Biden had previously reversed Trump’s 2018 order banning openly transgender military service members. The Pentagon has been directed to end invented and identification-based pronoun usage and update medical standards within 60 days. Advocacy groups and members of Congress have criticized Trump’s order as discriminatory and harmful to the transgender community.

The president also instructed newly appointed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to abolish all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices within their departments. These directives are part of the Trump administration’s efforts to “restore America’s fighting force.”
