Lenexa Police in Kansas City, Missouri, are alerting residents to a new crime trend targeting outdoor post office mailboxes. Thieves are stealing checks from these mailboxes and “washing” them, altering the payee and amount to empty victims’ bank accounts. The police have received multiple reports of mail theft and check washing across Johnson County. As a precaution, they advise individuals to avoid using outdoor mailboxes, especially after pickup hours. Instead, they recommend using the mail slot inside the post office, using a gel pen while writing checks to make alterations more difficult, avoiding window envelopes, and considering electronic payment options like online banking or apps. This warning comes as a KCK bank was robbed around the same time a nearby school went on lockdown, highlighting the importance of staying vigilant to protect against financial crimes in the community.
