President Donald Trump is utilizing a vast array of technology to track and surveil immigrants as he carries out mass deportation plans. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Citizen and Immigration Services have spent $7.8 billion on immigration technologies since 2020, including biometric tracking, location tracking, and investigative tools that can access emails and text messages on locked phones. The tools were initially designed for investigations of criminals after the 9/11 attacks, but are now being used on immigrants residing in the U.S.
Immigration attorney Marina Shepelsky warns that four groups of immigrants are being targeted in Trump’s raids, including those with criminal convictions, deportation orders, or expired visas. AI technology is being used to comb through immigration records and predict the likelihood of visa overstays or criminal behavior.
While there are ethical concerns with AI, some experts believe it can streamline the immigration process and improve border security. The technology is likely to continue playing a key role in Trump’s immigration policies and administration agenda.
