Deadly Eaton and Palisades fires fully contained after 24 days

The Palisades and Eaton fires, both wind-fueled, broke out in Southern California over three weeks ago and have now been declared fully contained by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The Palisades Fire began in Pacific Palisades and quickly grew in the dry weather conditions, while the Eaton Fire started in Los Angeles County and spread into Altadena. At least 29 people were killed in the two fires, with the official cause still under investigation.

The Palisades Fire covered over 23,000 acres and destroyed thousands of structures, while the Eaton Fire devastated Altadena, destroying numerous century-old homes and historical sites. The fires occurred in a region experiencing drought-like conditions and powerful winds, leading to extreme fire weather that was described as “particularly dangerous” by the National Weather Service.

Despite overwhelming attempts to stop the fires, some were successfully contained and extinguished. Governor Gavin Newsom had preemptively moved state fire personnel and equipment to the area in anticipation of the dangerous fire conditions. A recent storm brought much-needed rain to parts of Southern California, helping to reduce the fire potential in the region.

Overall, the wildfires in Southern California were destructive and deadly, causing significant damage to both communities and natural landscapes. The containment of the fires marks a significant milestone in the ongoing battle against wildfires in the state.
