Carlos Estévez has signed a two-year, $22 million contract with the Kansas City Royals, with a club option for 2027. The 32-year-old pitcher played for the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies last season, finishing with a 2.45 ERA and 26 saves in 54 appearances. Despite helping Philadelphia win the NL East, Estévez gave up a decisive grand slam to Francisco Lindor of the Mets in the National League Division Series. He was an All-Star with the Angels two years ago.
Infielder Braden Shewmake was designated for assignment to make room for Estévez on the Royals’ 40-man roster. Shewmake, claimed off waivers from the White Sox in January, was a first-round pick of the Atlanta Braves in the 2019 draft but has struggled in his brief MLB career, hitting .118 with one home run and four RBIs in 31 games.
