Defense agency prohibits Black History Month and other ‘special observances’

The Defense Intelligence Agency has put a pause on all activities and events related to special observances such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Black History Month, Juneteenth, LGBTQ Pride Month, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and others in compliance with President Donald Trump’s executive order. This directive comes as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to target programs promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the federal government. Other agencies, including the Department of Justice, have also ended diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and disbanded employee resource groups.
Some former government officials, such as Andrea M. O’Neal and Troy Blackwell, have expressed disappointment at these rollbacks, emphasizing the importance of observances in acknowledging and raising awareness about American history and underserved communities. O’Neal highlights the impact of such changes on community morale and comfort in the workplace, while Blackwell notes the historical contributions of African Americans and the need for policies that address systemic inequalities.
The decision to halt these observances and programs has sparked criticism and disappointment among individuals who see them as important for recognizing the struggles and contributions of marginalized communities in American history. The move signifies a broader trend of eliminating programs perceived as promoting diversity and inclusion in the federal government.
