A Henry County, Missouri school, Davis School, has canceled classes Thursday and Friday due to high levels of chemicals in the air. Neighbors blame the closed Montrose, Missouri Evergy coal-fired power plant for the high levels of toxins. A recent report by Triangle Environmental Science & Engineering found that levels of Radium 226 and total Radium exceeded the Missouri Department of Natural Resources default testing limit.
As a result, Davis School Superintendent/Principal Karen Mefford announced that the school will be temporarily relocated to Bible Baptist Church in Clinton, MO until further testing can be performed to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Local residents, such as Stacey Shanks, are concerned about the health risks posed by the high levels of toxins. One resident has already left their home due to health concerns and has filed a lawsuit against Evergy. The company stated that they conduct regular testing and are compliant with environmental guidelines but were not made aware of the recent test results until the lawsuit was filed.
Evergy plans to hold a town hall meeting to address the concerns of residents in Henry County sometime during the week of January 27. The status of Davis School classes next week at the Bible Baptist Church is still unknown as of Friday evening.
