Chicago Public Schools made an error when officials initially claimed that immigration agents had visited a school, causing fear amidst concerns about the new Trump administration. It was later clarified that the officials were actually U.S. Secret Service agents investigating a threat related to the TikTok ban. The agents did not enter the school and left after their visit. Chicago Public Schools stated that they followed safety protocols and that the incident highlighted the readiness of the system to keep students and staff safe. The misunderstanding came shortly after Trump’s inauguration, and Mayor Brandon Johnson reiterated Chicago’s commitment to being a Welcoming City. Trump has signed executive orders related to immigration, including declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and seeking to end birthright citizenship, although the latter has been temporarily blocked by a federal judge. Additionally, Trump signed an order directing departments to immediately repel and remove illegal aliens at the southern border. Johnson emphasized the importance of not spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary fear and panic in the community.
