Sophomore Kansas pitcher Dominic Voegele has been named the Big 12 preseason pitcher of the year and a unanimous preseason all-conference pick after a standout freshman season. Voegele broke the program record for strikeouts by a freshman and has also been named a second-team All-American. The Jayhawks, with a roster composed mostly of newcomers, have been picked to finish ninth in the Big 12 this season.
Fellow sophomore Cooper Moore is another key player for the Jayhawks, along with returners Michael Brooks, Chase Diggins, and Mike Koszewski. The team has added several transfers and junior college products to help bolster their lineup. Despite being picked ninth in the conference, the Jayhawks are looking to build on a successful season last year.
In the preseason poll, Oklahoma State was picked to win the Big 12, followed by Arizona, TCU, and West Virginia. Nolan Schubart from Oklahoma State was named preseason player of the year, while Houston’s Cade Climie was named newcomer of the year and TCU’s Noah Franco was named freshman of the year. The Jayhawks will open their season on Feb. 14 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Overall, Kansas baseball is gearing up for an exciting season with high expectations for Voegele and the rest of the team as they aim to make their mark in the competitive Big 12 conference.
